Wedding Colour Schemes for 2018: inspiration on this year’s top colour picks

When you’re planning your wedding, your colour scheme is everything. Whatever shades you decide upon will influence not only the flowers and décor, but your dress and what your fiancé wears, your bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen suits, the invitations, the wedding favours, the food…every tiny aspect has the potential to be impacted by this one choice – so you’d better get it right!

With so many colours to choose from and so many ways in which it needs to fit, selecting the perfect shade combo can be challenging. It needs to go much further than just being your day-to-day favourite colours as this won’t necessarily fit in with your wedding theme or venue. You need to find tones that look great in all areas, that are flattering and that complement each-other like a dream.

Fortunately, as with all things wedding, there are annual trends to help you make the best choice. For 2018, there are a few palettes that have taken the lead on the bridal runway that you are going to just love. For those of you feeling brave enough to choose something bold, we’re looking at the Pantone Colour of the Year: Ultraviolet. For the Brides-to-be who want to go for femininity and timeless romance, its got to be the Blush & Grey combo that never seems to go out of favour…

Read on for details and inspiration on this year’s top colour picks, with mood-boards courtesy of THE BLACK TUX (who have got you covered when you need to find rental suits to match your choice!) so that you can go off and get those swatches sorted!

Ultra-Violet

You’ve probably already started to see this year’s Pantone Colour of the Year taking over pretty much everywhere and the wedding industry is no exception.

Bold and undeniably beautiful, this vibrant shade is perhaps one that you might not have considered in the past, but now that we’re being presented with its stunning potential here, there and everywhere, it’s time to have a re-think.

Said to communicate “originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future”, Ultra-violet is a wonderful choice if you’re looking for a wedding colour theme that’s more than just aesthetically pleasing, but inspirational too and a nod towards the amazing things that are yet to come as you make your way into the adventure of married life.

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute says “The Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”

wedding

Make it work by…

It is clear to anyone that ultra-violet is a pretty strong hue, which when you’re thinking about using it as an overall wedding theme could end up being a little over-powering. Make it work for your big day by:

  • Using ultra-violet more as a splash of incredible purple accents alongside white and maybe even gold if you fancy embracing the decadent side (and why not – it is your wedding day after all!).

  • Finding it in nature. As shown in THE BLACK TUX mood board, ultra-violet is present in the natural world in the form of some really gorgeous flowers. Using blooms to blend this bright colour into your wedding day, alongside bridesmaid dresses, table dressing or anywhere else you’d like to throw it in can help to lend a more romantic feel than a synthetic one.

  • Embracing your fairytale princess! There’s no way around it – the ultra-violet colour theme is kind of a magical one and very definitely girly. I love the golden filled macaroons shown here on the mood board and can’t help but feel as though there’s something a bit Disney or maybe even ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ about them.

Lilac & Green

If you love the idea of integrating purple into your wedding day but don’t want to go full on ultra-violet, how about blending lilac and greens together instead for and ethereal woodland feel?

This is just so perfect for the summer bride who has chosen to take the party outside. Save on décor costs by using what nature has already given you in your outdoor venue and brighten it up a bit with shots of varying lilac tones.

One big plus side to having two contrasting colours as your palette is that you have the option of mixing and matching your bridesmaid dresses. It’s so hard to please everyone with a single colour, so this gives your girls the chance to choose their favourite which might end up easing unwanted tension!

wedding

Make it work by…

If full-on ultra-violet is a bit much for you but you’re a fan of purple, toning it done and blending it in with subdued nature tones is the perfect alternative. Lilac and green is one colour theme we’ll be seeing lots of in 2018. Make it work by:

  • Sticking to just two block colours can get a bit boring, so liven it up by using a wide variety of tones that fall into the remit of lilac and green.

  • Get your guy wearing ‘stone’ or ‘oatmeal’ for his suit shade. This is not your usual tux, but for an outside summer wedding it can be the perfect solution when darker colours just seem a bit heavy. It works really well with lilac and green and you’ll look elegant yet fresh as you walk down the aisle together.

  • Keep your bridal makeup natural. Just because you’re going for a colourful theme doesn’t mean you need to go for colourful makeup. In fact, with all that vibrancy around you’ll be better off going for understated beauty.

Slate & Moss

These fresh, earthy tones work all year round – gorgeous for an outdoorsy spring/summer wedding and equally so when combining with furry stoles and twinkly lights in winter.

Although this colour scheme allows for a very classic wedding, it also has a very contemporary appearance that will keep the overall style of your big day on point.

If you’re a nature-inspired bride with a love of Boho bridal hairstyles and the latest slate smoky eye trend, this is the ideal colour palette for you. Just imagine: your ‘naked’ wedding cake, quirky rustic décor and perhaps a barn venue. Just divine!

wedding

Make it work by…

This is such a sophisticated colour scheme and if you choose it for your upcoming wedding, you can rest assured that you are totally on trend. Subtle and simple yet carrying it’s own special decadence, make it work by:

  • Using large, cream flowers sparingly with lots of sage and mossy toned foliage to make up your bouquets and other floral arrangements.

  • Including pops of colour here and there. Slate and moss and stunning colours but alone, they can look a little drab. Just an injection of colour every so often can really bring the whole look together.

Blush & Grey

Blush and grey tones just never seem to go out of fashion in the wedding world, so if you love these colours you simply can’t go wrong! If you’re after romance, there isn’t any other colour scheme that gives it off quite like this one. Peachy hues and splashes of dove grey embodies classic glamour and a loved up feel and as an added bonus – it is super versatile.

Think pink and embrace it! Pink champagne, pink rose petals, pink candles, pink cakes. It will look fabulous! The addition of soft grey will keep it under control just enough to make sure it looks elegant rather than like a little girl’s birthday party.

wedding

Make it work by…

Blush and grey is the number one wedding colour scheme for romance, so if that’s your thing you are going to love it. Don’t forget – pink is not just for girls! It can also be a really flattering colour for the guys and very cool. If the Groomsmen are willing to brave pink suits, do it! Make this colour scheme work by:

  • Matching your blush bridesmaid dresses with the groomsmen accessories for cute synchronicity.

  • Saving the blush colour for your own dress and have your bridal party in grey instead. If you love it, go for it! Brides are not confined to only wearing white anymore. A pink-hued gown will look absolutely incredible.

  • Not being afraid to go overboard. Having dusky, pale pink everything with grey accents can look great. Unlike some of the brighter colours which can get a little overwhelming, it’s hard to overdo the peachy tones.

  • Throwing a bit of glitter in there. Let’s face it, blush and grey is super-girly so if you want to have a bit of sparkle involved, it’s certainly not going to look out of place here.

Wedding Hair & Skin Prep for Winter Brides

Christmas Day is one of the most popular times of the year for ‘the big question’ to get popped, so if you’re one of the lucky ladies preparing to say your I Dos in 2018 you’re probably going to be facing the new year wondering where on earth to start with your wedding preparations…

Book Your Hair & Makeup Trial

the sooner the better!

There’s going to be plenty to keep you busy during your wedding planning from finding that dream wedding dress to booking your hair and makeup trial run (and everything else inbetween!), but in amongst all of this it’s also important to remember to take some time for yourself, stay calm amidst the excitement and start to take care of your hair and skin at a whole new level so that you look and feel your very best on your wedding day.

A great hair and makeup artist can of course be quite transformative in the work they do, but you’ll always feel more confident and comfortable if you’ve invested a bit of ‘me time’ into pampering yourself in advance. The best things you can do for your hair and skin change throughout the year, depending on the weather and what you are faced with on a daily basis, so whatever time of year you’re planning on getting married – whether you’re a summer bride or a winter wonderland bride – I’ve got you covered with some top tips on what you can do to get your hair and skin in the best shape possible.

wedding brides wedding makeup bride hair style by Pam Wrigley bridal hair stylist make-up artist london zoo

To get you started, today’s blog is focusing on what you can do to promote gorgeous hair and skin during these cold winter months and this should be adhered to for brides right up until April, when we start to see the back of this dreary weather…

Tips for Beautiful Hair & Skin at Your Winter Wedding

The winter months are often the most drying for hair and skin, thanks to the blasts of hot central heating and cold air and the chill leading many of us to stop drinking as much water as perhaps we should be.

Because of this, hydration is key to keeping your hair lustrous and your skin soft, smooth and supple – the perfect base for making the most of makeup.

  • Treat yourself to an over-night hair oil treatment once or twice a week on the run up to your wedding for locks that are super shiny and frizz-free. Spend at least 10 minutes applying the oil of your choice with a luxurious scalp massage to really stimulate the blood flow to your scalp for optimal hair growth and balanced sebum production.

  • Your skin is going to be pretty thirsty too, so whatever you do – don’t skip the moisturiser! A weekly intense hydration mask will help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles that are exacerbated by dehydration and leave you with plump, youthful, healthy skin.

  • Avoid really hot showers. It can be tempting to crank up the heat when you’re showering on a cold day, but that hot water is as damaging to your hair as heat styling and it will also strip your scalp of much-needed moisture which can lead to a flaky appearance, so keep it cool whenever possible.

wedding makeup and bridal hair
  • If you suffer from frizzy, flyaway hair, a silk turban for sleeping in might be what you need. You’ve got that ring on your finger so your other half can’t leave you now, even if you do look a bit mad at bedtime! Despite the funky appearance, it’s totally worth it. Wrapping your hair in silk helps to retain moisture in each strand as well as depositing some of that luxurious silk, whilst also avoiding excess static-causing friction as you sleep. Check out SILKE London for some ready to wear turbans that actually look pretty glam…

  • Dry skin isn’t as good as hydrated skin at shedding dead skin cells, so exfoliation during winter months in preparation for your wedding day is a must! Buy yourself a lovely exfoliator and add this important step into your skincare routine each night before bed. Gently does it! You don’t need to scrub (this will do more harm than good!) just light, circular motions will do the trick. Exfoliate before you go to bed so that your skin doesn’t have to content with UV rays afterwards and slather on that moisturiser when you’re done.

My Expert Tips for Achieving the Perfect Wedding Makeup

The last thing you want on your wedding day is wedding makeup that doesn’t make you feel amazing. Whether that’s because it’s not applied as well as it could be or it’s just not the look you were imagining, it’s important that you figure out how to get the wedding makeup of your dreams long before your big day, whether that’s with the help of a professional wedding makeup artist like me or going it alone.

Need Bridal Makeup Inspiration?

The makeup you decide on for your wedding day needs to make you feel like ‘the very best version of you’, but that doesn’t mean that just your every day makeup will suffice!

There are certain things you need to take into account when putting together that perfect wedding makeup, with your makeup artist or on your own, to make sure that you get the look of your dreams on camera and off.

Why Hire a Pro for Your Wedding Day?

Hiring a bridal hair and makeup artist can help enormously with easing the overall stress on the morning of your wedding day, meaning that you’ll be left feeling happy and confident when it matters most.

Your wedding day can be quite full-on and this is just one of the reasons why even if you’re fairly nifty when it comes to applying your own makeup on a daily basis, getting a helping hand from a pro really takes the pressure off.

A great wedding makeup artist will get your look just right, so that you feel amazing walking down that aisle.

Regardless of whether you’re hiring a pro or going it alone, here are my top tips for achieving the perfect wedding makeup:

Your Trial Run

If you choose to hire a hair and makeup artist for your wedding day, the trial run is the time when you decide on the all-important look, so it’s key to get the most out of it that you can.

Book your trial run in 3-6 months before your big day (read more about what to expect on your Trial Run here).

Whilst the outcome of the trial will largely come down to the skill of your makeup artist, there are some things that you can do to make the most of it:

  • Wear a white top so that you can see how your makeup will look against your dress (button up, if you’re having your hair done too!)
  • Take photos to see the look on camera, from all angles
  • Stock up on inspiration images and bring them with you
  • If you’re planning on having a fake tan on your wedding day, have it for the trial too.

Naturally Gorgeous Lashes

Even if you’re going for a very natural look, false lashes are an absolute must for making those peepers picture perfect.

Strip lashes look a little fake and full on, so I tend to avoid these and instead, I use individual lashes for gorgeous length and volume that looks really natural.

Picture Perfect Products

The type of makeup used can have a big impact, especially when it comes to flash photography.

Any makeup that contains SPF, zinc oxide or are marketed as ‘illuminating’ can have what is known as a ‘masking effect’ in photos, meaning that you’ll might look white as a sheet! You can either avoid these and instead look for makeup that is HD, long-lasting or designed for camera.

Don’t worry if your favourite base contains one of these products – your makeup artist can apply a light dusting of one of Dior’s Nude Air Glow Powders – they are fabulous for adding a touch of warmth and gorgeousness, so your base will look fab in all your photos!

My favourite foundation brand is Cosmetics A La Carte, for their huge range of shades that suit every skin tone, long wear and flawless finish on and off camera.

Use Bright, Natural Lighting

Always apply your makeup in bright, natural light! Make sure that you have this for the trial (or if you’re practicing your own makeup) and on the day itself too.

If you’re getting ready in a hotel room or similar, think about where you can sit on the day to have your makeup done that has plenty of natural light.

Steer Clear of Lip Gloss

Unless you absolutely love it – it might be best to avoid super-shiny lip gloss – it can be super sticky and more likely to come off at the first kiss!

No gloss doesn’t mean that you have to wear a matte lip:  I often use a lipstick with a satin or shimmer finish instead rather than a full-on mirror gleam for a beautiful, longer lasting alternative.

Have The Big Day Your Wedding Guests Really Want…

It’s all very well and good saying that your big day is for you and your spouse so at the end of the day, all decisions should come down to want you want. To an extent that’s true, however, not every couple wants to throw a wedding that is just for them – many brides and grooms are concerned about how to keep their wedding guests really happy and how to ensure that their wedding is the one that everyone remembers as the wedding!

If you’ve put together a great guest list, brimming with names of your nearest and dearest, your wedding attendees are going to consist of family and friends that you wouldn’t want to celebrate this moment without. Considering that, it’s no great surprise that you might be thinking about what to include in your big day for your wedding guests to enjoy.

We’ve all been to weddings that were expensive, tedious and a little less than fun but that’s almost certainly not the kind of day you’re aiming for! Make sure that your loved ones have an amazing time at your wedding, by making it one to remember.

Serve Late Night Snacks

Weddings can be quite exhausting and all that activity and exciting works up an appetite! You might not feel hungry, thanks to all those wedding day nerves, but your wedding guests definitely will – even if they were there for the big meal earlier on!

After a while of drinking and dancing, your guests are going to start feeling the need for a late night snack, so indulge them, rather than having that be their cue to leave.

Going for a relaxed vibe doesn’t mean that you have to lose out on beauty. There are so many gorgeous barns, gardens, and even festival sites available to hire for an utterly beautiful, yet informal backdrop. You and your guests will feel like you’re celebrating in serious style, but if you spill a drink on the dance floor, it’s not the end of the world. Phew!

wedding guests

Save on Favours, Spend on Booze

Wedding favours are a cute tradition, but unless you’ve got something really personal or creative in mind, your wedding guests probably aren’t that fussed. Most token wedding favours are discarded pretty early on or forgotten about altogether when it’s time to leave, so save yourself the time and expense of getting everyone a bag of almonds and instead, put that extra cash behind the bar!

Wedding guests are usually far more appreciative of complimentary booze than they are of favours, so why not give them want they really want?

Thoughtful Touches

Make your wedding unique by adding some thoughtful, personal touches to the proceedings. This doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive – it could be something as simple as having some old photos of you together with your guests put onto their tables, handwritten notes thanking them for coming or, if you are keen on having favours, giving them something they can actually use – like a hangover kit, or fold up pumps for the ladies!

wedding guests

Consider a Relaxed Venue

If you’re having a family-friendly wedding, it can help everyone to relax if the setting isn’t somewhere that you wouldn’t imagine children would usually be allowed to run free!

Stately homes and grand halls look fabulous in photos and for some, this impressive setting is perfect for them, but if you think that you and your guests might have more fun in a relaxed venue, don’t shy away from that.

Instil That Party Vibe

There’s no need to have your sit down meal feel like a sombre affair, so don’t be afraid to liven it up a bit!

After the ceremony, you’ll all be feeling wired and excited, so keep that upbeat feeling going with dance-inducing music playing upon entry to your dinner hall and keep the meal fun and light-hearted, with games and conversation starters on the tables. This is a great way to keep people chatting and energy levels up.

Avoid Interruptions

You are of course going to want to have some traditions and interruptions to the proceedings, such as speeches, first dance and cake cutting, but try to keep them minimal.

There’s no need to have poor old dad droning away for 15 minutes or to make everyone stop what they’re doing to watch you newly weds have your photos taken as you cut the cake, so keep things short and sweet and don’t force people to pay attention if they don’t want to.

Bridesmaid Must-Haves: From Gorgeous Dresses to Flawless Hair & Makeup

Being a Bridesmaid is a big honour and a big duty! Whether you’re going to be a Bridesmaid yourself or you’re a Bride looking for all the best ways to make your girls look and feel as confident as possible for the special day there are a number of things that you need to consider. From beautiful Bridesmaid dresses and accessories to the perfect hair and makeup to set off the look, here are all the Bridesmaid must-haves for a dreamy wedding day.

The Perfect Dresses

Gone are the days of Bridesmaids having to live in fear over the terrible outfits they’re going to be forced into! No-one likes a frilly taffeta gown anymore, it’s all about looking sleek, chic and fabulous as you lead the Bride down the aisle.

One thing that is still a cause for concern for many Bridesmaids out there is that the dresses chosen for them, no matter how lovely, might not suit their individual shape or style. The best way around this is to either choose a colour scheme and let your girls choose, or find fabulous multi-way dresses so that Bridesmaids can be matching whilst also making it their own.

For higher budgets, Watters has some incredible choices in a variety of current colours that are well worth looking at. If you’re a little more limited, cost wise, M&S Wedding has some really gorgeous, affordable options including a variety of multi-ways.

Flawless Hair & Makeup

Bridesmaids have to look fabulous in those wedding photos too and having flawless hair and makeup really does make all the difference.

Many Bridesmaids are happy to do their own hair and makeup, although there’s no denying that there’s going to be an awful lot going on in the morning before the wedding, so it might be more stressful than they imagine.

If you know that your Bridesmaids are going to want their hair and makeup professionally done, make sure to let your Wedding Hair & Makeup Artist know well in advance so that assistants can be arranged and timings and costs can be taken into account.

The experience of having their hair and makeup beautifully applied is wonderful and makes the day all the more fun and memorable! Bring a button shirt or dressing gown to wear whilst getting your hair and makeup done so that you can get changed after without messing it all up.

bridesmaid beautiful mature bride wedding natural makeup by Pam Wrigley bridal hairstyle hair style waves

Flat Shoes

You’ll probably all be sporting heels for the main event, but bringing a pair of pretty, flat shoes for later in the day is a must if you want to be cutting shapes on the dancefloor without cutting up your feet!

New shoes are the worst for blisters and foot pain, so try to break your shoes in before the big day if possible. Arm yourself with silicone shoe pads and blister plasters too, just in case, but your best bet is to switch to pumps before the pain sets in, if you know it’s coming.

Bridesmaid Survival Kit

Don’t forget your Bridesmaid survival kit (and a cute handbag to put it all in)! This will be full of bits and pieces that might save the day for you Bridesmaids and the Bride too.

  • Paracetamol
  • Tissues
  • Needle & thread
  • Safety Pins
  • Mints
  • Mini deodorant/perfume
  • Chalk/ talcum powder (in case of stains on your dress)
  • Tampons/ sanitary pads
  • Plasters/Gel pads for feet
  • Compact mirror
  • Spare tights
  • Straws (to avoid smudging your lipstick)
  • Oil blotting sheets
  • Indigestion tablets

There is so much to think about when planning your big day and what’s more, there’s so much that you need to think about in relation to each other. When you’re rifling through wedding day inspiration, pinning like mad and coming up with your dream theme, colour scheme and décor, remember that all of your choices will also have to reflect in your final wedding dress selection.

When you’re finally taking the plunge to choose your wedding dress, the pressure is on to get it just right – you do only get to wear one after all! Make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to browse different designers and styles and don’t forget that the average wedding dress takes around 6 months to make once you’ve found it, so you’ll probably want to start the hunt 8-10 months in advance.

With so many things to take into account, it can be tough to know where to start. Follow my top tips on wedding dress shopping to find out how to choose your wedding dress and know it’s the right one…

Consider ALL factors

There are so many things that play a part in selecting the perfect wedding dress for your big day, some of which are not so obvious. As a bridal hair and makeup artist with over 20 years of experience, I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds (maybe thousands?!) of brides-to-be so I’ve heard just about all wedding dress dilemmas!

When you’re making your decision, here are 3 key points to think about:

Wedding Dress Comfort

Yes, you want to look drop dead gorgeous, but whatever you do, don’t let that come at the expense of your comfort – you can have the best of both worlds! You want your day to be nothing but pure joy, and wearing a wedding dress that makes you feel uncomfortable in any sense (whether that’s down to restricted breathing, tripping up on long skirts, the feel of the material or wearing something that just isn’t really ‘you’) is one sure-fire way to put a downer on your wedding day.

Find a wedding dress that not only looks fabulous, but feels fabulous too.

wedding dress. Wedding makeup and bridal hair in a soft low bun hairstyle. By Pam Wrigley wedding makeup artist and bridal hair stylist, Richmond, London.

The Groom

I’m not just talking about finding a dress that your fiancé will think looks beautiful, you also need to factor it what he wants to wear (it’s his day too!) and almost more importantly, his height and stature. Shoes and hairstyle also play a big part here! If you and your groom don’t have much difference in height but you would both rather have him looking and feeling taller than you on your big day, then you might find a smaller dress works better. You should also consider his outfit – is he going to be wearing a suit? Or perhaps a kilt or other traditional dress?

To look your best together as you say your ‘I dos’, stay well coordinated in both colour and style.

Venue/Destination

Always settle on your venue or travel destination before making a final decision on your wedding dress. It may seem obvious to some, but it is so easy to get caught up in that dream wedding dress idea and end up going for something that, when it comes down to it, is totally inappropriate.

If you’ve always been dead-set on wearing a huge, ball gown wedding dress with a cathedral veil, then perhaps it’s time to say goodbye to getting married on a beach in the Maldives. Decide what is the most important aspect to you and go with that, but whatever you do, make sure that your dress is suitable for your venue, don’t try to make something work that in your heart you know won’t – trust your instincts!

Summer Bridal Hairstyles 2016

I Woke Up This Gorgeous

Looking ‘made up’ isn’t for everyone – it’s becoming more and more commonplace for brides to want to have a more relaxed, boho feel to their finished hair and makeup look, with a tousled ‘I woke up this gorgeous’ finish, and I have to say, it does look fabulous!

Summer bridal hairstyles, and makeup too, often takes on a much more natural look (I guess the warm weather brings out the free-spirit in us girls!). This goes perfectly with lighter dresses, particularly in a more informal venue such as a beach, barn or festival wedding.

I recently created this beautiful, loose curl hairstyle with unraveling braid and vintage/boho accessories by Gillian Million for a photoshoot, showcasing some of the most popular summer bridal hairstyles.

This may look totally effortless and like it might all slip out of place at any moment to you, but I have put together this style in such a way that the incredibly discreet backcombing and securing techniques will hold this hairstyle in place as you dance away into the night!

High Bun

The High Bun is a surprisingly versatile style, and the ideal pick of the summer bridal hairstyles for those of you jetting off somewhere hot or hoping for a scorcher here in the UK. Keeping your hair up, off your neck and out of your face and go a long way in keeping you comfortable, particularly when the nerves start kicking in!

When looking at summer bridal hairstyles, there are many factors you must consider – Will it go with your dress? Will it fit in with your theme and/or venue? Will you feel happy and comfortable as well as gorgeous?

If you think the high bun is for you, you’ll be pleased to hear that this works well for almost all hair types – you will need long hair for it though, or consider using extensions for the perfect size and volume.

Tousled Up-do

Perfectly polished but not ‘done’, it’s been a popular style for years and it still looks just as wonderful now as it did when it first appeared on the seen – the tousled up-do is a definitely one to try for bride to be who want to look romantic, ethereal and totally chilled all at once!

For this style, I set the hair in rollers for lovely root boost, volume and gentle curls, before backcombing a little underneath for added height to fix in the elegant hair vine and pinning into a faux plait at the back, with lots of weaving and overlapping to make this style look really intricate and beautiful.

My bride here wore a lovely vintage inspired dress, but this is one of those summer bridal hairstyles that looks great match with a number of themes.

I particularly like this look with a boho or low back gown to help show off that gorgeous detail.

A lot of women are getting married later in life these days, and some of my favourite bridal makeup looks have been on my more mature brides.

Being a little older doesn’t mean you can’t look just as gorgeous as you did in your 20s, as long you (or your bridal makeup artist) know the subtle adjustments to make in terms of products used and technique.

If you’re 40+ and getting married, it is essential that you go with a makeup artist who know’s their stuff when it comes to creating gorgeous makeup for mature brides, or if you’re thinking of doing your own makeup, make sure you know all the tips and tricks of the pros for a flawless finish!

As we age, our skin and hair texture starts to change, and applying makeup to this sort of surface is very different to what you may already know

To learn how to apply your own bridal makeup beautifully, you can always attend our 1 day makeover masterclass, where you can discover fabulous looks that work for you with our team of pro hair and makeup artists, but to keep you going before you can join us there, here are some top tips on working with mature bridal makeup from award-winning Pam Wrigley:

Skin

When starting with your bridal makeup base, remember that mature skin may have a tendency to be quite a bit more dry than what you’re used to.

To combat this and ensure a flawless finish, be sure to start with a lovely hydrating primer to prepare the skin. Do not skip this step, whatever you do!!

Using a hydrating primer will not only help to create a more even and supple base to work with, but it will also help to minimise pores and fine lines, which no-one wants to see when they get their wedding photos back!

Pam’s favourite primer for mature brides is the Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer.

Go light on the foundation if you can – thick bridal makeup will only lend to deeper creases and lines. To better your chances of getting good coverage with as little product as possible, make sure you’re using really high quality foundation or tinted moisturiser, with lots of pigment, for smooth, even coverage.

Pam’s favourite foundation when working with a mature bride is Cosmetics A La Carte – Skin Tint.

Under The Eye

Be very careful when working on the eye area – the skin here, particularly under the eye, can be very delicate and sometimes quite creased.

For coverage, choose something very light (even lighter than the skin tint mentioned above!). You want something that does the job and creates luminosity, without looking caked on.

Pam’s favourite under-eye coverage for mature brides is YSL Touche Eclat or By Terry Touch Expert

For lining under the eye, avoid using eye pencils as these do tend to get into the creases and smudge. Instead, opt for an angled brush and a dark eye-shadow to create the required ‘oomph’!

Pam’s favourite brush for this is the Screenface Angled Brow Brush

Eyeshadow/Eyeliner

Begin by using a light primer on your eyelids, to help reduce that ‘crepey’ look. Don’t use a regular eye primer for your bridal makeup (such as MAC paintpots, which Pam likes to use on her younger brides), as this can be too heavy and give the eyes a droopy look. Instead go for something nice and light.

Pam’s favourite light primer for a mature bride is Ingot Eyeshadow Keeper.

Always use powder eyeshadow rather than cream, as they last longer and won’t settle into the creases. Gentle shimmer shadows can work well for bridal makeup, but avoid too much glitter as this will just emphasise lines.

Pam says “Sometimes I start with a matte eyeshadow to get the shading and highlights just right and then I add a touch of colour with a slight shimmer on top (just in the inner and centre eye lid and a touch below the brow) – this gives a bit of freshness to the finished look!”

When applying eyeliner, avoid harsh clean lines – keep them looking soft and subtle instead. By all means, use a liquid or gel liner for precision, but not too thick! Once applied, soften it by applying a smudge of a dark eyeshadow on top and blend out with a soft angled brow brush.

Lips & Lashes

When it come to doing the lips, it’s always personal choice whatever your age! However, for mature brides try to avoid glosses or anything too matte.
Ideally, you want a soft moist look to the lip, but nothing too over the top.

To keep the lip colour precise, make sure you use a great liner.Cosmetics a la Carte do a lovely waterproof invisible lipliner.

Lashes get thinner as we age, however, using a thickening mascara to beat this will only end up looking clumpy. Use a fine mascara and build it up in layers for that gorgeous, fluttering volume.

Pam uses Clinique Lash Power on her mature brides, or Lance Hypnose Drama for a bit of extra oomph!

False lashes are always a winner when it comes to adding those finishing touches, however, avoid strip lashes as they look far too fake! When you’re going for fabulous, effortless looking glamour that looks like we haven’t tried too hard(!) try using individual lashes – You can use different lengths for a really natural look.

Pam likes to use the Salon System Individual Lashes, as they come in a great variety of lengths to enable you to create the perfect look. Try combining Ultra medium, short and ultra short along the eye for full on gorgeousness or if you have shorter lashes, just try the short and ultra short for a natural look.

Brows

When creating beautiful brows you may find powders easier to control than pencils, to get just the right amount of colour without going too heavy.
With mature brides, brows should only be gently defined and not too dark – just enough to frame the face.
You might have thin brows that you love, and that’s OK! You bridal makeup is about what is right for you after all, so keep them that way and just add a bit of definition.

Benefit Brow Zings Brow Shaping Kit comes in a couple of different shades with some great little brushes. It also comes with a set of mini tweezers – ideal for getting the perfectly framed face effect!

Blusher & Contouring

Cream blushers are lovely to use on mature skin – they look fresh, dewy and fabulous! Exactly what you want for great bridal makeup.

Pink tones on the cheekbones and apples looks stunning on most complexions. However, if you have more of a ruddy complexion, avoid pink tones and opt for nude tones on the outer edges of the cheek bones instead, avoiding the apple, as the natural redness might start peeping through after you’ve had a glass of champagne!!

Bobby Brown do some lovely, textured, cream blushes in fabulous natural looking shades.

If you’re after some definition and want to try your hand at a bit of contouring, easy does it!

It is very easy to over-do this technique, so take it slow and build up gradually.

Illamasqua do some lovely contouring gels that are easy to use and work well on mature skin, but use with caution!

Having your makeup done by someone else doesn’t mean you won’t look like *you*, so long as your MUA knows what she/he is doing! The aim of the game is to look your very best, whilst feel comfortable and confident.
