Smooth Sleek Bridal Hairstyles

Smooth Sleek Bridal Hairstyles always look gorgeous.

It’s a fact, you can be guaranteed to wow when you opt for one of these classic bridal hairstyles.

Smooth sleek styles hairstyles are more often than not up-do’s.

However, if you are lucky enough to have beautiful straight thick hair, your hair will naturally lend its self to one of these smooth styles. Which means your hair will stay looking smooth and sleek whether it is up or down.

If you have fine, wispy hair, a smooth sleek up-do will work beautifully.

However, just be aware if you opt for a hair down style your hair may start to look straggly after a couple of hours. And the lovely smooth sleek style you started off with may disappear.

Bridal hairstyles

Smooth and sleek styles encompass a wide variety of different options.

I always suggest brides book their venue and pick their wedding dress, before choosing their wedding hairstyle.

On the wedding day, everything will need to work together seamlessly. And your bridal hairstylist will be able to advise you on which style will work best with your hair type and face shape.

Bearing in mind your overall wedding theme, including the venue, dress and hair accessories.

The trial run is an invaluable part of the bridal hair service, so make sure you book one in advance.

Secure wedding day hairstyles

One thing is for sure, if you opt for a smooth, sleek wedding day hairstyle it will need to be secure.

So your bridal hairstylist will need to be particularly good at their job.

Actually, they need to be good at hair prep – to make sure the hair is glossy and gorgeous. They will have to create the right foundations so the hairstyle stays up! And they will have to adapt the style to suit your face shape.

Having a smooth sleek style doesn’t mean your hair has to be pulled back tight!

wedding hairstyles 2021

On trend Wedding Hairstyles in 2021 will continue in the beautiful relaxed vibe of 2020.

Soft relaxed half up styles are going to be as popular as ever this year.

Partly because they exude the perfect combination of ‘I haven’t tried too hard’ and ‘I’m naturally this beautiful’.

As wedding hairstyles go, the half up style is definitely a classic.

In the 25+ years I’ve been working as a bridal hairstylist I’ve created hundreds of half up bridal hairstyles.

Over the years they have changed, from being smooth and sleek with barely a hair out of place to the soft relaxed tousled hairstyles we see on Instagram today.

Having said that, soft relaxed curls seem to have been in fashion forever. And they continue to be so today.

Textured & secure hairstyles

A lot of the styles on Instagram look like they almost defy gravity :)

However, there is a big difference between being able to create Instagram worthy hairstyles for a photoshoot and for someone’s wedding day.

When I’m creating these styles for a photo shoot, the model just needs to walk from the styling area to the set, and that’s it.

And, the hairstyle only has to stay in no longer than an hour or so.

However, on the wedding day it’s a completely different story.

I will make sure your bridal hairstyle will withstand the rigours of the day, what ever they may be.

Bridal Hairstyles for fine hair

wedding braided hairstyle natural makeup pam wrigley

bridal hairstyles for very fine hair

Where fine hair is concerned, whatever your hair length, doing a Google search for bridal hairstyles can be a bit disheartening.

This is because lots of bridal hairstyles seem to have been created on models with seemingly long hair – and lots of it!

But don’t despair, a lot of the bridal hairstyles on Instagram have been created with the help of extensions.

Bridal hairstyle smoke & mirrors

Hair extensions are used extensively (excuse the pun) in lots of bridal hairstyle images out there.

But, although they can look great, they are by no means essential.

A lot of my brides, whether they have fine hair or not, prefer not to use extensions in their wedding day hairstyles.

This isn’t a problem at all, as with the right bridal hairstyle know-how, some of the most beautiful bridal hairstyles can be created with fine hair.

hairstyles beautiful wedding makeup and bridal hairstyles into a low bun by bridal hair stylist Pam Wrigley in central London bridesmaids

beautiful bridal hair styles

By using the right hair prep your bridal hairstylist will be able to work with your fine hair.

And they’ll make it appear fuller and thicker.

So it will be perfect for creating a wide range of bridal and wedding day hairstyles.

It’s best to allow plenty of time for your hair trial and what’s more, your hair will need to be squeaky clean.

This is because fine hair has a tendency to get greasy easily. And if there is one thing that can make fine hair look even thinner it’s a layer of grease.

hair products for fine hair

If you are a DIY bride, it’s important that you don’t over load your hair with product. And go very sparingly with serums and leave in conditioners.

The problem with these products if that they can over load and weigh down your fine hair.

With the result being hard-to-manage hair and a bridal hairstyle that could’ve been so much better.

If you have fallen into this bridal hairstyling trap, all is not lost.

You can rescue your ailing fine hair with a generous spray of dry shampoo.

The batiste brand has 2 great options, with one for dark and one for fair hair.

The best bridal hairstyle products for fine hair

With the right hair styling products, you’ll be able to get the best out of your fine hair for your wedding day hairstyle.

Soft, silky, fine hair can be given extra oomph and volume by using a texturising product such as Fudge Urban Sea Salt Spray.

You’ll be able to get extra volume and texture, which is just what you’ll need to achieve your perfect bridal hairstyle.

taming fine flyaway hair

What’s more, this product works like magic when it comes to taming fine flyaway hair.

And what’s more, it is super lightweight so it won’t weigh down fine hair.

Even better, it can double up as a finishing product so you can get an extra shine to your wedding hairstyles.

In short, having fine hair, whether it’s long, short or in between won’t stop you from having a totally beautiful bridal hairstyle!

Wedding Hairstyle Ideas

Hairstyle Ideas for your big day

This page is dedicated to wedding hairstyle ideas, so I can offer you a little bit of inspiration for your big day.

Whatever the length of your hair you’ll be able to find the perfect wedding day hairstyle.

And, although there are lots of style ideas and inspiration to be had on Instagram, finding a hairstyle that will be right for you on your wedding day is another story altogether.

wedding hair trial run

That’s where the trial run comes into its own. I always suggest my brides do a bit of research in advance of the trial, that way you can start to narrow down your style ideas a bit.

Having a few images to look at on the trial will also be really helpful for me as well. Because I will get a rough idea of the sort of wedding hairstyles that you like.

Your wedding hairstyle ideas may vary widely, and that’s no problem.

Don’t worry, it will help me to get a feel for you and the sort of looks that you might potentially go for.

Having said that, the images are just a starting point. When choosing the right hairstyle we’ll also need to consider your dress, jewellery, hair accessories and your venue.

So, there are lots of things to consider before I even put a comb through your hair.

wedding natural vintage bridal make-up low bun hairstyle Pam Wrigley Sussex

clean or dirty hair

It is a myth that dirty hair is better to work with when it comes to creating wedding day hair styles.

Well, I suppose it depends on your definition of dirty.

Perhaps it’s better to say greasy hair is never good to put up!

I usually recommend my brides arrive for their trial run with clean, dry hair.

You can either wash your hair the day before the bridal trial or if your hair gets greasy easily you can wash it on the morning of the trial run.

One point to note however, I always ask my brides not to use any leave-in products, deep conditioners or serum.

Certain leave-in products can make the hair super soft and slippery, as a result, they can be a bridal hairstylists nightmare!

Curly hair brides can, however, disregard this rule!

Because the rules regarding leave-in products do not apply if you have naturally curly hair.

The starting point is always slightly different when coming up with wedding hairstyle ideas for naturally curly hair, and it will be different for each curly hair bride.

Please get in touch to discuss your individual curl requirements!

Bridal Hairstyles for Long Hair

long thick heavy hair bridal hairstyle and wedding makeup by Pam Wrigley soft natural curls and braids

Bridal Hairstyles for Long, heavy Hair

If you’re lucky enough to have lovely long, thick, heavy hair you’ll have lots to choose from when it comes to looking at bridal hairstyles.

However, there are a couple of stumbling blocks to watch out for so read on for lots of advice on wedding day hair styles.

One thing is for sure, with long, thick heavy hair you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a wedding day hairstyle.

long lasting hairstyles for thick, heavy hair

So, if you’d like your hair up, a messy or neat bun your stylist just needs to create the right foundations.

This way your hair will not fall down, on the contrary, it will stay in place all day and into the evening.

You can take your pick of half up styles and beachy waves when you have long thick heavy hair.

However, there are a number of things to consider, not just your hair type and your face shape, when your choosing a wedding hair style.

The venue, your wedding dress and believe it not even the height of your groom also need to be factored in.

So don’t be in a rush when it comes to choosing the right wedding hairstyle for your big day.

Wedding Hair Styles for thick, long hair

Gorgeous Plaits & BraidsFishtail braids, French, Dutch and waterfall braids can all be incorporated into your wedding day hairstyle and they all look gorgeous!

Braids often show up best in hair that has different tones and a few highlights eg blonde hair, highlighted or low lighted hair.

So, if you have dark hair that is one solid colour it night be worth having a chat with your hairdresser.

braids & beautiful hairstyles

Because just a couple of different tones in the hair will make sure your braids look photo-ready!

You can incorporate braids with Beachy waves, soft curls or gorgeous volume. And because you can have your hair up, or down, so the choice really is endless!

On your trial run your wedding hairstylist will be able to try different curling techniques, different braids as well as different hairstyles.

Bridal hair styles for Heavy hair

If your long, thick heavy hair also happens to be poker straight – your hairdresser will need to work a bit harder to create a curl that stays in all day.

But don’t despair, because fabulous long-lasting curls can definitely be achieved for your wedding day hairstyle.

Heated rollers probably won’t pack enough punch for your long hair. So your bridal hairstylist will probably need to use tongs, straighteners or even a curly blow-dry.

DIY bridal hairstyles for long hair

If you want the curl to hold, you don’t want the hair to be too clean – or too dirty. It’s a fine balance.

When curling with tongs you’ll find it best to start at the nape of the neck and working upwards. Only curling small sections of hair at a time and securing the curl in place until they are cool will really help your curls stay in.

The curls will also last longer if you avoid using any deep heat treatments, leave in conditions or hair oils of any kind. Just in the few days before the wedding.

You almost want the hair to feel a little bit ‘dry’. But don’t worry, your hair stylist can always make your hair shine, but if it is too soft it will not hold the curl.

Always use a good heat protector before curling, I love Silhouette Style & Care Lotion.

Then, once you’ve finished you can try spraying your lovely curls with a touch of dry shampoo – it will give the curl a bit of extra longevity!

Bridal hairstyles for long hair – working with extensions

Kate, the bride in this photo has fabulously long thick heavy hair, but we still needed to add several 24″ extensions to create this lovely over the shoulder braided wedding day hair style.

Many of the gorgeous hairstyles we see on Pinterest and Instagram have had hair extensions added to give that extra bit of oomph and gorgeousness.

Hidden hair extensions

Bonded extensions are an option, but can be expensive. Clip in extensions can look just as fabulous and they’re so much easier to work with and adaptable with when it comes to creating beautiful wedding hairstyles.

I always recommend human hair extensions. Synthetic extensions don’t blend as well with your own hair and there is less control when it comes to getting the perfect curl.

Human hair is undeniably the pricier option but it’s well worth it. Save your self extra work and buy hair extensions with clips already sewn on, they don’t cost much more but they will save you a lot of time and energy!

I love using American Dream extensions for their really natural look and great range of colours and hair types. Remember though, the hair must match your hair as closely as possible.

NB If you are only going to wear your hair extensions a couple of times, no need to buy the more expensive Remy hair.

Top Tip

For extra holding power try using a sprinkling of texturising powder at the root of the hair just before you clip in the extensions.

Hair up styles for long, heavy hair

Buns are a great option for when it comes to creating beautiful wedding hairstyles for long, thick, heavy hair.

High, low, smooth and sleek fo soft and relaxed, the choice is yours.

One of the brides’ biggest concerns is that their hair might have to be pulled back tight at the front in order for their hair up.

No need to worry. No matter what the length of your hair, the hair at the front can be soft and relaxed and gorgeous, straight, braided or curly, the choice is yours.

long lasting bridal hairstyles

One of the best things about getting your hair up is that, with the right hairstylist,  you can be confident it will stay put, and you wont need to worry about it at all.

Foundations are the key. are sure your hair feels secure and comfortable once it is finished. Don’t be afraid to let your hairdresser know if you ‘wedding up-d’o isn’t comfortable – so she/he can put it right – it’s going to be in for a long time.

Start a Pinterest board and collect as many wedding day hairstyles as you can! You can never have too much choice. Send them to your wedding hairstylist before the trial run.

securing bridal accessories in thick, long, heavy hair

Once your hair style is created, looking beautiful and feeling secure it will be time to secure your bridal hair accessories.

stop right here

However, if your bridal hairstyle isn’t feeling secure at this point it’s imperative that you let your bridal hairstyle know.

As they will need to take a few steps back, identify the problem and rectify it before securing your hair accessories.

Once your hairstyle is secure, the rest will be easy. Your hair accessories can be placed wherever they look best, in order to finish off your perfect wedding day hairstyle.

Summer Bridal Hairstyles 2016

I Woke Up This Gorgeous

Looking ‘made up’ isn’t for everyone – it’s becoming more and more commonplace for brides to want to have a more relaxed, boho feel to their finished hair and makeup look, with a tousled ‘I woke up this gorgeous’ finish, and I have to say, it does look fabulous!

Summer bridal hairstyles, and makeup too, often takes on a much more natural look (I guess the warm weather brings out the free-spirit in us girls!). This goes perfectly with lighter dresses, particularly in a more informal venue such as a beach, barn or festival wedding.

I recently created this beautiful, loose curl hairstyle with unraveling braid and vintage/boho accessories by Gillian Million for a photoshoot, showcasing some of the most popular summer bridal hairstyles.

This may look totally effortless and like it might all slip out of place at any moment to you, but I have put together this style in such a way that the incredibly discreet backcombing and securing techniques will hold this hairstyle in place as you dance away into the night!

Fancy trying something like this for your big day? Get in touch to arrange a trial with me!

High Bun

The High Bun is a surprisingly versatile style, and the ideal pick of the summer bridal hairstyles for those of you jetting off somewhere hot or hoping for a scorcher here in the UK. Keeping your hair up, off your neck and out of your face and go a long way in keeping you comfortable, particularly when the nerves start kicking in!

When looking at summer bridal hairstyles, there are many factors you must consider – Will it go with your dress? Will it fit in with your theme and/or venue? Will you feel happy and comfortable as well as gorgeous?

If you think the high bun is for you, you’ll be pleased to hear that this works well for almost all hair types – you will need long hair for it though, or consider using extensions for the perfect size and volume.

Will this style work for you?

  • Keep your cool! A great hairstyle for hot weather.
  • Thick, heavy hair? This style works perfectly for you.
  • Don’t quite have the length? Try American Dream hair extensions!

Tousled Up-do

Perfectly polished but not ‘done’, it’s been a popular style for years and it still looks just as wonderful now as it did when it first appeared on the seen – the tousled up-do is a definitely one to try for bride to be who want to look romantic, ethereal and totally chilled all at once!

For this style, I set the hair in rollers for lovely root boost, volume and gentle curls, before backcombing a little underneath for added height to fix in the elegant hair vine and pinning into a faux plait at the back, with lots of weaving and overlapping to make this style look really intricate and beautiful.

My bride here wore a lovely vintage inspired dress, but this is one of those summer bridal hairstyles that looks great match with a number of themes.

I particularly like this look with a boho or low back gown to help show off that gorgeous detail.

Vintage bridal hair & makeup is so diverse and never goes out of fashion – there are so many eras with such elegant, classic looks to play with and today’s modern bride can even work with her stylist to take the best bits of her favourite vintage bridal hair & makeup looks and turn it into something truly unique.

Vintage bridal hair & makeup is one of my favourite styles to work with on my clients, it’s so much fun! I adore this 1920s/1930s style wedding dress that one of my brides this year wore. We worked hard on her trial day to find a vintage bridal hair & makeup look that worked for her and made her feel beautiful. We decided upon this gorgeous low bun style, structured and the back and a little looser at the front for a really romantic edge.

Teamed with a stunning vintage bridal hair accessory and quite natural looking makeup with eyes that pop, this vintage bridal hair & makeup look was absolutely perfect!

From the back of this stunning vintage bridal hair style you can see all of the intricate detail I included to make this look really something special.

This style is a wonderful match for the bridal gown as well, drawing the eye down towards that lovely detail at the back, but adding the the overall effect rather than taking anything away from it.

For the Mother of the Bride, we went for a similarly structured low bun but with just a little less fanciful detail. Again, we have gone for the softer front with a neater back and some height on the crown for added elegance.
