Natural Bridal Makeup

Natural bridal makeup on your wedding day will enhance your features and bring out your natural beauty. So, whether you are a young or mature bride, you’ll be able to blow him away when he sees you walk in the room.

With today’s Instagram images fuelling the trend for strong brows and equally strong contouring you might feel a bit intimidated if you’re a ‘no makeup’ kinda girl.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to makeup, on your wedding day you can have your makeup as strong or as natural as you like.

Your makeup does not have to be heavy for the photographs.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, confident and gorgeous on your big day.

Exactly how ‘natural’ you go for your wedding day makeup will depend on a number of different factors, all detailed below.

Natural makeup on your wedding day

Day time or evening wedding?

You can get away with a bit more makeup for an evening wedding – and you can still look really natural.

Summer or Winter wedding?

The days are so much shorter in the winter, and the light quite cold, even on a sunny winters day, so you’ll need a touch more makeup than you might think – just to look healthy and glowing!

Black tie affair in a Mayfair Hotel or Festval themed wedding in a barn?

You can definitely carry off a natural wedding makeup for either event, but the makeup would need to be tailored to fit you, your dress, the time of day and the lighting in the venue.

There is no need to look or feel like someone else on your big day

Whatever the time of day, type of venue or time of year be the ‘best version of you’ on your wedding day, with a natural, gorgeous makeup.

Natural Wedding Makeup Fabulous Eyes

Natural makeup depends on the subtle play of colours and tones, applied in just the right balance. The emphasis can be on the lips, but more usually it will be on the eyes.

Wedding makeup isn’t about just looking good on camera.

Your makeup doesn’t have to be heavy to look gorgeous on your wedding day.

On the wedding day the focus will be on you, you’ll be in a lot of photographs on your big day, however, you don’t have to have a heavy makeup to look good in photos.

It’s all about balance, it is important that your makeup looks good when people look at you close up.

Soft browns, neutral greys, even soft greens such as Lichen by cosmetics a la carte can be perfect for contouring and defining the eye.

A touch of shimmer on the eye lid can be pretty, for either a summer or winter wedding.

Lashes can be key when it comes to making a natural eye pop. I love using individual lashes – to give a little bit je ne sais qua.

The impression we want is that your eyes look gorgeous but the onlooker isn’t sure why.

Bridal makeup: the Base.

Choose your primer to suit your skin type, oily, dry or combination.

Next step is to even out your skin tone, try a lovely light tinted moisturiser e.g. a la carte Radiance Tinted Moisturiser

Cream or powder blush both work equally well, the skill is in the application.

It is important that your natural makeup stays looking good all day, so I would still advise a light dusting of powder such as Mac Prep & Prime.

Brows can be natural, but a touch of definition will help to frame your features. I find brow powders a bit easier to control when applying than brow pencils, best to start off with less definition and build up slowly.

Natural Bridal makeup, the trial run.

It can take more skill to apply beautiful natural makeup than dark, smokey wedding makeup.

To make sure you are happy with your natural makeup I would recommend organising your trial run during the day rather than in the evening. Artificial light in our homes is usually yellow and combined with the colour of your walls will affect the way your makeup looks. It’s always best to do the trial in natural light, so you can see how your makeup really looks.

The majority of my brides wear white or ivory dresses, not a colour we’re used to wearing every day, so you may need a hint more makeup than you would normally wear, just to make sure that you don’t get lost.

After all, we want the attention to be on you and not just on your dress.

Wedding Makeup for Mature Brides

wedding makeup and bridal hairstyles for mature brides, mother of the bride and mother of the groom by Pam Wrigley

Wedding Makeup for Mature Brides

I love creating wedding makeup and bridal hairstyles for my mature brides and older ladies. So whether I’m working with the bride, mother of the bride or mother of the groom, it’s always a pleasure.

It’s undeniable fact that as we get older, our hair and skin changes.

So it is essential that your bridal hairstylist and wedding makeup artist is used to working with mature skin.

They will have to have the right knowledge and techniques to know how to get the best results.

As we approach menopause things definitely start to change.

So even if your hair is thinning or you’re in the midst of hot flushes, don’t worry – I understand!

From selecting the right products to showing you a variety of different hair styles, I know just how to make my mature brides look and feel amazing!

Whether you are a mature bride or mother of the bride or mother of the groom, there is no time limit for the trial run.

This means you’ll be able to try different looks for both wedding hair and bridal makeup.

I normally hate having my photo taken you did my hair and makeup exactly how I had hoped. It made me feel so much more relaxed and confident on the day!!

Whatever your age, you can have a smoky makeup if you want one!

Some of my older brides worry about either having too much makeup or not enough.

There is no right or wrong.

What is important is that your makeup is right for you. I

If you’re not used to wearing makeup don’t be fobbed off with “you need heavy makeup for the photographs’. Because you don’t.

You may need to wear a touch more makeup than usual. However, in the right hands, your makeup should feel natural, not heavy or caked, and you don’t want to end up look like someone you’re not.

Chat to your makeup artist before the trial run so you can get a feel for the way she works.

The right makeup products definitely help and when it comes to makeup for mature skin you can’t beat cosmetics à la carte.

Wedding makeup & bridal Hair for Older Ladies & Mature Brides

You might want to wear your hair up or down, as we age our hair tends to get thinner and can become a bit coarser.

In the right hands you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved.

Trial Run

It’s probably best to have your hair clean and dry for your trial run, so your stylist can have a proper look at your hair and work out which styling method will be best considering your hair type.

It’s all in the prep

Your wedding hair stylist may opt for a blow dry, curling tongs or even heated rollers. I confess – I do love a heated roller – you’ll get root lift, oomph and a gorgeous sexy va va room to your wedding day hair style.

Don’t be in a Rush

Allow plenty of time for your trial run so you can try different ideas, if you have your hair accessories for the day it can be helpful to take them with you to the trial. Your stylist will there to offer advice and help you find the right style for your wedding day.

Bridal Makeup For Oily Skin

soft smoky bridal wedding makeup and hair by Pam Wrigley London soft low bridal bun hairstyle

Bridal Makeup for Oily Skin

Be confident of long lasting bridal makeup on your wedding day, even if you have oily skin.

It might not seem like it, but oily skin is a blessing. . .once you get past the problems with breakouts and open pores. The one thing to remember is that you’ll stay younger looking for longer!

There are lots of skincare products out there to help you balance your skin. However, I’m not going to go into skincare on this page, as I like to leave that to beauticians and dermatologists.

My job as a wedding makeup artist is to work with your oily skin on the wedding day. I’ll be able to create bridal makeup that won’t look shiny or greasy. Plus I’ll make sure that your wedding makeup will last all day.

bridal Make up for Oily Skin

On your wedding day, it is important that your makeup lasts all day.

My advice, unless you’re going to have a makeup artist with you all day, is to – avoid the dewy look, full stop.

Oily skin has a tendency to shine, particularly on the T-zone. And sometimes the eyelids, cheek and chin can also become oily over the length of the day.

Your best friend will be either a loose or compact powder to retouch your makeup or blotting sheets. We’ll get onto which powder to use later, but for now, as far as blotting papers are concerned there really is no need to spend a fortune, you can get them from Superdrug or Boots for under £5.

They’ll help to keep any shine at bay without any build-up of product – which you’ll be glad about if you get married on a hot sunny day.

Bridal makeup – get ready – Get set – go!

Keeping your wedding makeup looking good all day starts at step one.

I usually recommend my brides to cleanse and moisturise as normal on the day of the wedding.

You want your skin to be perfect on the wedding day! So if you don’t have facials regularly – don’t have one the week before wedding – if there are any spots hiding under the skin –  best to leave them there.

Primers should be light and oil-free – your makeup artists will have her favourite product. However, I love Laura Mercier Oil-Free Primer, this light, oil-free product will start the mattifying process. Rich, creamy products will make the foundation slip and slide.

Mattifying products – usually light gels, that smooth over the skin and absorb any excess oil. Best applied before you put your makeup on. I love matte miracle by a la carte, it is light and easy to apply and does the job.

Open pores : Benefit Porefessional is amazing, it’s easy to apply and does a great job when it comes to minimising pores and even fine lines. Apply just before the foundation.

Some of my favourite products are manufactured by a London based company, a la carte, they have a fabulous selection of products for oily skin.

  • Light coverage, combination/gently oily skin – Sheer Balancing Foundation
  • Buildable coverage, combination/oily skin – Velvet Tint Flawless Cream Foundation
  • Acne-prone skin/oily skin – Cover Tint Flawless Touch Mineral Foundation

Each of these products can be used in combination.e.g. Sheer Balancing all over, Velvet Tint on  the T zone and Cover Tint as touch up throughout the day.

Bridal Makeup for oily skin – Finishing Touches

When thinking about foundation – you can choose between light. medium or full cover.

The key is to look for light, oil-free formulations or even mineral powder. Avoid foundations sticks –  as they tend to be oily in their nature – it’s just the way they are made.

One thing to remember about foundation – which ever one you use – is that generally speaking  the more expensive the base – the more pigment it will contain.

This means you will be able to use less product and yet still get a flawless finish.

The key with foundation is to make sure you set it. Don’t get me wrong, the foundation is important, but powder is the key to making your wedding makeup last all day.

I love MAC Prep & Prime, it is colourless and works on all skin tones. Avoid using under the eye – especially if you have mature skin, as fine lines can end up looking like full-on wrinkles.

Try applying with a large powder brush or a powder puff. If you have particularly oily skin apply generously and leave it to sit on the skin for a couple of minutes before brushing away any excess with a brush.

You actually want your bridal makeup to start off looking a bit powdery and possibly a bit too matte .

Don’t worry, it takes around 30 minutes to an hour for the makeup to settle on the skin. So by the time you’re ready to get dressed and have your photos taken your wedding makeup will look natural and flawless.

Wedding Makeup Quick Fix

Mineral powders are a great option when it comes to creating flawless bridal makeup for oily skin e.g. matte mineral foundation by a la carte.

If you haven’t tried them before I would definitely recommend giving them a try. You can use them on their own or on top of your base if you want an exceptionally flawless finish.

They’re quick and easy to apply, and you can go for a light or full cover just by changing how much product you apply.

When you’re using your mineral powder on its own, just make sure to give your primer time to settle and dry on the face. So ensuring the mineral powder glides on effortlessly and doesn’t stick to the skin.

Alternatively, you can apply the mineral powder over your foundation. With this option you will need to set your foundation first with your translucent powder.

You can then apply the mineral powder with a big clean blush brush, using small, gentle, circular movement to almost ‘push’ the product into the skin.

Help is at hand even if you have any stubborn spots or blemishes that keep creeping through your makeup no matter what you do.

Try applying a touch of mineral powder as a finishing touch once you’ve finished your makeup. Then leave it to settle for a few minutes before brushing off any excess.

This is step is easy to repeat if needed throughout the day.

Avoid mineral powders with shimmer added as they will bring back the shine we’re working hard to get rid of.

Dewy wedding makeup

Ok, if you want a dewy finish you can have one.

The key is to start matte. So definitely use a setting powder.

There are a couple of options when it comes to achieving a dewy finish when creating your perfect wedding day makeup.

Careful use of highlight. The last thing you want is to look greasy or sweaty in your photos, and this is definitely a risk if you opt for a ‘dewy all over’ finish.

I would advise using a powder highlighter applying it carefully in the areas you want to shine. Apply just above the cheekbone, and a touch below the brow, and that’s it.

Definitely not down the centre of the nose or on your forehead, or you will undo all the good work you’ve put in with your primer, Mattifying products, foundation and powder.

Setting sprays are great, personally I love the NYX product. But avoid the dewy finish setting spray.

You have your own natural dewy glow, as the day turns to night you might find your self using a touch more powder or a couple of the shine-free papers I mentioned earlier, to make sure your makeup takes you effortlessly from day to evening.

Brides, Here’s How to Make the Most of Your Wedding Hair & Makeup Trial Run

5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Wedding Hair & Makeup Trial Run

And your wedding planning is probably well underway. With venues to view, dresses to try, food to taste and parties to plan, you’ve got a busy stretch ahead of you but we all know that one of the things you’re looking forward to the most is deciding on that perfect wedding hair and makeup look.

All of us girls have fantasised about how we’ll look walking down the aisle and the hair and makeup is a huge part of that. It’s got to be your dream look – something that makes you look and feel like the very best version of you, so that you’re brimming with confidence when you say your ‘I dos’ and looking flawless in those wedding photographs.

Finding a wedding hair and makeup look that works for you can take time, so don’t leave it until the last minute. Flick through magazines, create Pinterest boards and get inspired by the pros (check out my wedding hair and makeup gallery here) but most of all, enjoy it! Play around with ideas, but ultimately, try to focus on looks that you know aren’t too far out of your comfort zone – just because it’s a big deal doesn’t mean it needs to be a ‘big’ look. Effortless, glowy and natural is beautiful, if that’s your thing, or equally if you love wearing heavy makeup with smoky eyes and a vibrant lip, go for it! Gather images of styles that work for you – it is YOUR day after all.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2366″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”Book Your Trial Run” txt_align=”center” add_button=”bottom” btn_title=”Find Out More” btn_size=”lg” btn_align=”center” btn_link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.weddingmakeupandhair.com%2Fbridal-makeup-wedding-hair-trial-run%2F|||”][/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532103010585{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]When you’ve got the big day booked in at your venue and you’ve found a gorgeous dress, it’s time to book in your trial hair and makeup run. Yes, you do get to luxuriate in bridal pampering not once, but twice!

The trial run is an incredibly important part of your wedding planning as it gives you the chance to not only try out all of these looks you’ve been obsessing over, but to also get professional guidance and figure out a style that you absolutely love. But to make sure that you get the most out of your trial run and know with complete certainty by the end of it that you’re over the moon, there are a few things you can do in advance and bear in mind on the day.

I love working with brides on trial runs – it’s always so exciting and it is usually the first opportunity we get to meet face to face and have some fun! Working with your ideas and creating a look that makes you feel amazing is all part of this wonderful job, but if you feel totally clueless as to what you want, don’t worry – together, we’ll work it out. I am an expert, after all![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2359″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532103831444{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

What is a wedding hair and makeup trial run like?

Some brides are a little nervous about their trial run and, although understandable given the importance, there is really no need to worry. Your trial run is a day of pampering and you are going to love it!

I’ll come to you and we’ll spend at least a few hours together, getting to know each other and trying out lots of gorgeous styles – but our session won’t be over until you’re 100% happy. If that takes a little longer, that’s fine, there’s no pressure and no time limit.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3007″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532103852445{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

I’ll encourage you to share your thoughts – looks you love, looks you hate(!), features you want to show off and maybe certain aspect you’d like to conceal. We’ll discuss all the details of your wedding: your dress, the venue, the theme, the colour scheme and even your husband! All of this will tie in to choosing a hair and makeup style that works exactly right for your big day.

I’ll offer my expert opinion and advice too, suggestion styles I think you would rock and colour palettes that will really flatter your skin tone. I might ask if we can try a style I can imagine you in that you haven’t thought of, just to see what you think, but I’ll never be pushy. Many of my brides end up going for something they hadn’t considered before, once they try it out, but at the end of the day it’s what you want that really matters. If you’re happy, I’m happy.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532103864884{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

During the trial, I’ll make notes so that when the day comes around, I know precisely how you want things done, just as we worked out before. This means there won’t be any surprises when it comes to your wedding hair and makeup – just a flawless look and a process that runs like clockwork, meaning you can enjoy every minute without stress.

A wedding hair and makeup trial is an absolutely essential part of getting it right before you walk down the aisle and any bridal hair and makeup artist who doesn’t insist on it is not doing their job properly! Your wedding day itself is not the time to be figuring out how you want to look and working out any kinks – every last detail should be sorted well in advance to ensure you have a fun, relaxed wedding morning.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532103928804{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

Come Prepared

It’s great to be prepared for your trial run, both by having had a look at hair and makeup inspiration to get a feel of what you might like to try and also, by prepping your hair and skin for styling and makeup application.

Lots of brides-to-be think that freshly washed hair is the way to go, but actually, when it comes to styling second day hair allows for the best results. Just washed hair tends to be a little bit fluffy, too soft and too silky if conditioner has been used and this makes it harder to get your hair to stay in place. Of course, if you know that second day hair doesn’t work for you, this is easily remedied with the right texturising products to add grip and securing techniques, but if you are happy to wash your hair the night before rather than in the morning, that is ideal.

It is also important to not use any product or serum in your hair before the trial run (or your wedding day!) as this can lead to product build up and weighed down, oily roots. I want to see you with your natural hair! No products and no styling beforehand – straightened hair does not like to curl, so leave the styling to me.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3002″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1532104405329{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532106227143{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

Wear White

Wearing white (or whatever the colour of your wedding dress) at your trial run is a great idea, as this will give you a little more insight into how you will look on the day. You’d be amazed at what a difference the colour of your clothes can make to an overall makeup look – it could completely change your perspective on lip, cheek and eye colour.

Take Photos

All brides love a selfie and your trial run is not a time to be shy about it. Snap away! You’ll be the centre of attention on your wedding day and you’ll be getting lots of photos taken of you, from all angles, so it’s important that you love how your hair and makeup looks on camera as much as you do in real life.

I’m more than happy to take photos from the back, front and side to give you a 360 degree view![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532104044899{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

Be Open Minded

As mentioned earlier, many of my brides end up going for a look they hadn’t originally thought of because of a suggestion I made at their trial run and while it is a good idea to stick to a look that doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable or unlike ‘you’, it’s all part of the fun to experiment, so try to be a little bit open minded.

We will try out loads of looks on your trial run until we create ‘the one’, so giving something a bit different a go won’t hurt and in fact, you may find that you love it![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2717″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1532105089587{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1532104068933{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

Relax & Enjoy!

Above all else, I want you to enjoy your trial run. This is a time for you to sit back, relax, get pampered and feel excited about your amazing wedding day! Even if you’re feeling a little nervous, you’ll soon find that I’m friendly and laid back and there to be your friend just as much as your hair and makeup artist.

I consider it to be part of my job to help you stay happy and calm on the wedding day itself and the same applies for your trial run. Expect lots of laughs, girly chat, enthusiasm and excitement. I love what I do and I love all of my brides, so I absolutely cannot wait to meet you and create your dream look![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
