Wedding Makeup for Mature Brides

I love creating wedding makeup and bridal hairstyles for my mature brides and older ladies. So whether I’m working with the bride, mother of the bride or mother of the groom, it’s always a pleasure.

It’s undeniable fact that as we get older, our hair and skin changes.

So it is essential that your bridal hairstylist and wedding makeup artist is used to working with mature skin.

They will have to have the right knowledge and techniques to know how to get the best results.

As we approach menopause things definitely start to change.

So even if your hair is thinning or you’re in the midst of hot flushes, don’t worry – I understand!

From selecting the right products to showing you a variety of different hair styles, I know just how to make my mature brides look and feel amazing!

Whether you are a mature bride or mother of the bride or mother of the groom, there is no time limit for the trial run.

This means you’ll be able to try different looks for both wedding hair and bridal makeup.

I normally hate having my photo taken you did my hair and makeup exactly how I had hoped. It made me feel so much more relaxed and confident on the day!!

Whatever your age, you can have a smoky makeup if you want one!

Some of my older brides worry about either having too much makeup or not enough.

There is no right or wrong.

What is important is that your makeup is right for you. I

If you’re not used to wearing makeup don’t be fobbed off with “you need heavy makeup for the photographs’. Because you don’t.

You may need to wear a touch more makeup than usual. However, in the right hands, your makeup should feel natural, not heavy or caked, and you don’t want to end up look like someone you’re not.

Chat to your makeup artist before the trial run so you can get a feel for the way she works.

The right makeup products definitely help and when it comes to makeup for mature skin you can’t beat cosmetics à la carte.

Wedding makeup & bridal Hair for Older Ladies & Mature Brides

You might want to wear your hair up or down, as we age our hair tends to get thinner and can become a bit coarser.

In the right hands you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved.

Trial Run

It’s probably best to have your hair clean and dry for your trial run, so your stylist can have a proper look at your hair and work out which styling method will be best considering your hair type.

It’s all in the prep

Your wedding hair stylist may opt for a blow dry, curling tongs or even heated rollers. I confess – I do love a heated roller – you’ll get root lift, oomph and a gorgeous sexy va va room to your wedding day hair style.

Don’t be in a Rush

Allow plenty of time for your trial run so you can try different ideas, if you have your hair accessories for the day it can be helpful to take them with you to the trial. Your stylist will there to offer advice and help you find the right style for your wedding day.

So many of my older clients write to me before their big day to express their concern over whether or nor it is possible for them to really love the way they look on their wedding day, but these worries are totally unfounded.

Many of my most stunning clients have been mature brides – age just doesn’t play a part when it comes to me helping you look totally gorgeous as you walk down the aisle.

It is true though, the hair and makeup for mature brides is a specialised skill – one that I am very proud to possess! Not because age makes you any less lovely but because it’s an undeniable fact that as we get older, our hair and skin changes and as a Bridal Hair and Makeup Artist it is essential to have the right knowledge and techniques to know how to get the best results.

I love using Rose Dew by Cosmetics a la carte on my mature brides as it is a lovely, moisturising base layer for dry skin which leaves your skin feeling plump, fresh and hydrated, ready for some flawless foundation!

if your skin is still a bit oily, lucky you! Oily skin tends to form fewer wrinkles and tell-tale signs of ageing. This does, however, mean that you’ll need a different primer to suit your skin type: Laura Mercier oil free primer is a great product for oily skin and helps to keep the oil at bay whilst diminishing open pores.

Cosmetics a la carte Matte Miracle is another fab option: A beautifully light, oil absorbing gel that you can use on the t-zone – an essential to avoid looking shiny on camera.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”2167″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1543995609429{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

No more wrinkles!

Worried about wrinkles getting in the way of you and you ideal wedding day look?

Benefit Porefessional is one of my favourite products to use on my mature brides as it makes enlarged pores and fine lines vanish, by literally filling them in and making them disappear.

Wrinkles around the eyes can be some of the trickiest to deal with, but a great eye primer can go a long way it smoothing out and preventing eyeshadow creases. I find that Inglot Eyeshadow Keeper is the best eye primer for mature skin as it is light and colourless, yet effective – perfect for very delicate skin.

Troublesome under eye area Maybelline Age Rewind Eye Concealer is one of those low cost items that really works. It’s light in texture and is super easy to apply.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”2041″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1495172091066{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1544598832811{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

All about the base

Everything goes to pot if you don’t get the foundation right on mature skin. I always keep application smooth and light with a product that is lightweight yet buildable so that is can provide great coverage where it’s needed. Many Bridal Makeup Artists get this wrong by being way to heavy handed in an attempt to cover up signs of ageing, but this only ever makes things worse!

I love Firm & Glow by Cosmetics a la carte it comes in a wide range of shades, it’s light weight and anti-ageing whilst having good coverage – all at the same time!

A very light dusting of powder will help to set the foundation – making sure every thing stays in place – particularly important if you have oily skin. MAC Prep & Prime loose powder has a lovely fine texture so it works beautifully on mature brides. It is colourless and so works on all skin tones.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Mature brides should avoid heavy contouring – as seen on YouTube! A gentle touch goes a long way.

I’ve found a lovely product Bare Cheek by one of my favourite makeup houses – Cosmetics a la carte.

Bare Cheek is a translucent gel that gives an ultra-natural bronze tint, smooths and perfects skin texture, and a radiant glow. Preservative-and perfume-free so ideal for sensitive skins.

Apply under the cheek bones and jaw for a fabulous sheer contour effect.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1543994710823{margin-top: 32px !important;}”]

Just a touch on the apples of your cheeks or along your cheekbones in all you need. There’s so much choice out there – have a browse around at MAC, Bobby Brown and Inglot – you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Highlighter should be subtle – not harsh. When correctly positioned it should sit on the upper edge of your cheek bones. It can look lovely – but it is dangerously close to the fine laughter lines around our eyes – and too much shimmer here will accentuate those lines and pile on the years – so go easy with the highlighter.

MAC Soft & Gentle is a powder shimmer that is definitely one of my new favorites.

If you prefer a cream highlighter try Shine Illuminator for a fabulous gentle, dewy finish.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1543994729685{margin-top: 32px !important;}”]

The Eyes Have It

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”1048″ img_size=”full” css=”.vc_custom_1495200854310{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1495200837214{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

The way that eye makeup is applied might be the thing that requires the closest attention to change on mature skin, as anything too heavy or harsh will really accentuate signs of ageing.

Liquid and pencil eyeliners create a line that is way too harsh for mature brides, so instead, I like the add definition with a well blended, dark eyeshadow applied with a small, angled brush, for a soft sultry look that never smudges.

I keep eyelids looking youthful by steering clear of shadows that contain too much glitter and shimmer, instead opting for matte or very light shimmer products.

Eyelashes are usually a little thinner on my mature brides, so it’s really important to use an incredible mascara that creates impressive volume without clumping. I stick to my favourite, Clinique Lash Power Mascara, and finish the look off with a few individual false lashes.

I go easy on the brows, making sure that they are beautifully defined with a brow powder or wax, but never overdone or heavy.  Powders and waxes are easier to control than a pencil – bit if you find pencils easier to use – find one that is not too soft – so you can control the amount of product you’re applying. Once it is on it’s hard to get off and remember less is more!

Apply just enough to create a flattering frame is what I aim for. Try this one by Anastasia Beverly Hills[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2051″ img_size=”full” onclick=”custom_link” css=”.vc_custom_1495210947121{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}” link=”http://twigandvine.photography/”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1495211009421{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453996573277{margin-top: 62px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]When starting with your bridal makeup base, remember that mature skin may have a tendency to be quite a bit more dry than what you’re used to.

To combat this and ensure a flawless finish, be sure to start with a lovely hydrating primer to prepare the skin. Do not skip this step, whatever you do!!

Using a hydrating primer will not only help to create a more even and supple base to work with, but it will also help to minimise pores and fine lines, which no-one wants to see when they get their wedding photos back![/vc_column_text][bsf-info-box icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-star” img_width=”48″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”left”]

Pam’s favourite primer for mature brides is the Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer.

Go light on the foundation if you can – thick bridal makeup will only lend to deeper creases and lines. To better your chances of getting good coverage with as little product as possible, make sure you’re using really high quality foundation or tinted moisturiser, with lots of pigment, for smooth, even coverage.

Pam’s favourite foundation when working with a mature bride is Cosmetics A La Carte – Skin Tint.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453996538696{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]Be very careful when working on the eye area – the skin here, particularly under the eye, can be very delicate and sometimes quite creased.

For coverage, choose something very light (even lighter than the skin tint mentioned above!). You want something that does the job and creates luminosity, without looking caked on.[/vc_column_text][bsf-info-box icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-star” img_width=”48″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”left”]

Pam’s favourite under-eye coverage for mature brides is YSL Touche Eclat or By Terry Touch Expert

[/bsf-info-box][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453993125067{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

For lining under the eye, avoid using eye pencils as these do tend to get into the creases and smudge. Instead, opt for an angled brush and a dark eye-shadow to create the required ‘oomph’!

Eyeshadow/Eyeliner

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453996433980{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

Begin by using a light primer on your eyelids, to help reduce that ‘crepey’ look. Don’t use a regular eye primer for your bridal makeup (such as MAC paintpots, which Pam likes to use on her younger brides), as this can be too heavy and give the eyes a droopy look. Instead go for something nice and light.

[/vc_column_text][bsf-info-box icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-star” img_width=”48″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”left”]

Pam’s favourite light primer for a mature bride is Ingot Eyeshadow Keeper.

[/bsf-info-box][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453994542374{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

Always use powder eyeshadow rather than cream, as they last longer and won’t settle into the creases. Gentle shimmer shadows can work well for bridal makeup, but avoid too much glitter as this will just emphasise lines.

[/vc_column_text][bsf-info-box icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-star” img_width=”48″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”left”]

Pam says “Sometimes I start with a matte eyeshadow to get the shading and highlights just right and then I add a touch of colour with a slight shimmer on top (just in the inner and centre eye lid and a touch below the brow) – this gives a bit of freshness to the finished look!”

[/bsf-info-box][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453994616468{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 62px !important;}”]

When applying eyeliner, avoid harsh clean lines – keep them looking soft and subtle instead. By all means, use a liquid or gel liner for precision, but not too thick! Once applied, soften it by applying a smudge of a dark eyeshadow on top and blend out with a soft angled brow brush.

Lips & Lashes

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453994705486{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

When it come to doing the lips, it’s always personal choice whatever your age! However, for mature brides try to avoid glosses or anything too matte.
Ideally, you want a soft moist look to the lip, but nothing too over the top.

[/vc_column_text][bsf-info-box icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-star” img_width=”48″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”left”]

To keep the lip colour precise, make sure you use a great liner.Cosmetics a la Carte do a lovely waterproof invisible lipliner.

[/bsf-info-box][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453994810399{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

Lashes get thinner as we age, however, using a thickening mascara to beat this will only end up looking clumpy. Use a fine mascara and build it up in layers for that gorgeous, fluttering volume.

[/vc_column_text][bsf-info-box icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-star” img_width=”48″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”left”]

Pam uses Clinique Lash Power on her mature brides, or Lance Hypnose Drama for a bit of extra oomph!

[/bsf-info-box][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453994903389{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

False lashes are always a winner when it comes to adding those finishing touches, however, avoid strip lashes as they look far too fake! When you’re going for fabulous, effortless looking glamour that looks like we haven’t tried too hard(!) try using individual lashes – You can use different lengths for a really natural look.

[/vc_column_text][bsf-info-box icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-star” img_width=”48″ icon_size=”32″ icon_color=”#333333″ icon_style=”none” icon_color_bg=”#ffffff” icon_color_border=”#333333″ icon_border_size=”1″ icon_border_radius=”500″ icon_border_spacing=”50″ read_more=”none” read_text=”Read More” hover_effect=”style_1″ pos=”left”]

Pam likes to use the Salon System Individual Lashes, as they come in a great variety of lengths to enable you to create the perfect look. Try combining Ultra medium, short and ultra short along the eye for full on gorgeousness or if you have shorter lashes, just try the short and ultra short for a natural look.

Brows

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1453996365372{margin-top: 32px !important;margin-bottom: 32px !important;}”]

When creating beautiful brows you may find powders easier to control than pencils, to get just the right amount of colour without going too heavy.
With mature brides, brows should only be gently defined and not too dark – just enough to frame the face.
You might have thin brows that you love, and that’s OK! You bridal makeup is about what is right for you after all, so keep them that way and just add a bit of definition.

Blusher & Contouring

Pink tones on the cheekbones and apples looks stunning on most complexions.
